Steve and Stephen Day Design

Stephen Day is an industrial designer, woodworker, and sculptor. Founded in 2006, Stephen Day Design is the realization of these pursuits and the blurring of lines between them.

Each of our furnishings and sculptural works are designed and hand crafted in our Oakland, California studios using the highest quality and most environmentally responsible materials and techniques. Commissioned works are carefully tailored to the considerations of the project's site and client's specifications. We believe in strong involvement of the client in the creative process and in the unique and powerful designs this collaboration can yield.

Born and raised in the Detroit area, Steve's aesthetic is shaped by that design landscape – Herman Miller and General Motors, Art Deco and industrial modernism, suburban sprawl and urban decay. Steve is passionate about modernism and the innovative application of materials, the magic of electricity, and the possibilities of light as a sculptural element. Steve holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan in Industrial Design and Metalwork and has taught lighting design at the California College of the Arts since 2003. With design expertise ranging from residential furnishings to retail displays, and from lighting to laboratory equipment, Steve brings an intensive study and wide ranging knowledge of manufacturing to his creations.
